Podcasts As Friends
I work from home. I don’t get out much. I skate weekly, mostly alone. Other than work Zooms, human interaction outside my wife and kids is rare.
I should pick up the phone. I have friends. Scheduling calls sucks. I choose headphones instead. The right podcasts with friendly banter or shit-talking fills the void. Skateboarding or coffee-related, there’s a few in rotation that I’ve listened to for almost ten years.
Growing up, my family moved a couple times across country. In my teenage and college years, when friendship was everything, I struggled to understand how my parents didn’t have closer friends in their lives. I get it now. What feels like a short season of life turns into the new normal if you’re not careful.
Podcasts, scrolling are nice band-aids. Going to have to rip them off one day. Maybe when the kids are older.
